You are not targeted because somebody wants your data specifically. They are caught because an automated attack found an account without multi-factor authentication, or a mailbox rule nobody noticed, or a machine two years behind on updates.
That is good news, because the defences that stop opportunistic attacks are mostly unglamorous and affordable. Multi-factor authentication on everything. Patching that gets done. Endpoint protection somebody reads the alerts from. Backups that have been restored from on purpose rather than in an emergency.
Backup is not the same as sync
This one is worth being blunt about. OneDrive and SharePoint are sync, not backup. If a file is encrypted or deleted, the change syncs faithfully to every copy. Microsoft is explicit that protecting the content in your tenant is your responsibility, not theirs, and their retention windows are shorter than most people assume.
A separate backup of Microsoft 365, kept somewhere that ransomware on a laptop cannot reach, is one of the cheapest pieces of insurance a business can buy.
